  • A little context goes a long way

I read the short overview, then open my Bible. It helps me understand who’s speaking and what’s happening without getting lost in the notes.

From Scripture to everyday life

Understand what you read. Know what to bring into prayer.

Knowing what happened in a Bible story is a beginning. You also want to understand what it asks of you.

Each page brings together the people and circumstances behind the book, its connection to Catholic teaching, and a reflection on everyday life. Then it points you to Scripture with something specific to notice.

So when you close your Bible, you have something to carry with you. A resentment to pray about. Someone to treat with more patience. A teaching you understand well enough to start putting into practice.

From Our Readers

  • An open companion resting on a reader’s lap

    Finally started Romans

I had been putting off reading Romans because I thought I needed to understand everything before starting. The overview gave me enough background to open my Bible and begin. I still have questions, but at least I know what I’m reading about.

  • A burgundy companion being unpacked from a paper mailer

    Easy to dip into

Just opened it and had a quick look through. I like that it gets straight to the point. I bought it to keep next to my Bible, so being able to turn straight to the book I need makes sense for me.

    Michael R.Ohio

  • An open companion with highlights and a sticky note

    Reading at my own pace

Mine already has a couple of sticky notes in it. The short sections make it easy to mark something I want to come back to. I’m reading slowly, and this fits that better than giving myself a whole study schedule.

  • A burgundy companion beside an opened cardboard package

    All 73 books together

I wanted a guide that included the books in my Catholic Bible. That was the main reason I chose this. I’ve only started looking through it, but having everything in the same place is useful.

    Daniel P.Florida

  • An open companion on a wooden desk

    A useful refresher

I use it more as a refresher than something to read straight through. Sometimes I recognize a passage but can’t remember the background. A quick look here helps me get my bearings before reading it again.

Why was Jonah angry when God showed mercy?

Jonah warns the people of Nineveh. They repent, and God spares them. Then Jonah gets angry.

The Companion’s overview brings that part of the story into focus. It then points you to chapter four with something specific to notice:

From the Jonah page

“Notice what troubles Jonah after Nineveh repents, and how God questions his response.”

Now, when you open your Bible, you can follow the conversation with that question in mind. The Catholic Reading section also points to Matthew 12:40, where Jesus connects Jonah’s story with his own death and resurrection.

And the reflection brings it into everyday life: is it easier to ask for mercy yourself than welcome another chance for someone you dislike? Something to think about—and bring into prayer.

Alongside Their Bible

  • Catholic Bible Companion in an everyday reading setting

    A simple place to start

I’m starting to read the Bible more regularly, and the short introductions give me a place to begin. I can get the background, then turn to the book itself without feeling like I have another whole book to study first.

  • Catholic Bible Companion in an everyday reading setting

    The bigger picture makes sense

I used to jump straight into a passage without knowing who was speaking or what was happening. Having the setting and main themes together helps me keep track of the bigger picture.

  • Catholic Bible Companion in an everyday reading setting

    Context for the Sunday readings

Sometimes a reading at Mass stays with me, but I want to understand where it fits. I like having something I can open at home to get a little context before going back to the passage.

  • Catholic Bible Companion in an everyday reading setting

    One book at a time

The one-page approach suits the way I read. I can look up one book, spend a few minutes getting oriented and carry on with my own Bible. I don’t need to start at the beginning every time.

A refresher I can return to

I’ve read parts of the Bible for years, and I still appreciate a refresher. The people, themes and Catholic connections give me useful points to notice when I come back to a familiar book.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a Bible?

It is a reference guide used alongside your Bible. It provides context and explanations; it does not contain the complete biblical text.

Is it only for beginners?

The explanations are accessible to first-time readers, while the book-by-book structure also makes it useful for returning readers who want a concise refresher.

Does it cover all 73 books?

Yes. Every book of the Catholic Bible has its own overview, including the seven deuterocanonical books.

Can I use it with my existing Catholic Bible?

Yes. The overviews follow biblical books and passages rather than a particular translation’s page numbers. Some verse numbering may differ between editions.

Is there homework or anything to fill in?

There are no worksheets to complete. Read the relevant page, open your Bible and reflect at your own pace.

Will it explain every verse?

It provides an introduction to each book and selected passages. Detailed questions about individual verses may require a fuller commentary.

How long is it?

The Companion has 80 pages, with one overview page for each of the 73 biblical books.
